The community's architectural and landscape statement encourages sympathy with the land's precious ecosystems. A contemporary Australian style of home is being encouraged, with emphasis on materials which reflect and enhance the surrounding environment.

Whilst electricity and telephone lines are supplied to each home site, residents supply their own water through collecting rainwater. They also take care of their own waste through re-use of treated grey water and a centralised state of the art black water treatment system which also irrigates the community land. These eco sensitive measures do not add a significant amount to the cost of building a home and they provide ongoing financial savings in terms of water costs.

Broken Head represents the best of the Byron Shire, with its pristine uncrowded beaches, limited housing and expansive coastal rainforest.
